TWO VIEWS: Senators Bramble and Dmitrich on vouchers

Sen. Bramble says, "When a child leaves public schools, the money attached to that child will stay in the local district for five years. After that, ALL of the money goes into the state's public education fund where it stays in perpetuity and will never be taken out of public education. I know many people have heard reports to the contrary. Those reports are simply wrong."

Would someone please explain what "ALL of the money" means and what Sen. Bramble means by this statement?

Senate Site, any ideas?

I believe Senator Bramble was referencing the assertion that the voucher scholarship program will take money out of public education. It doesn't. Even when a child leaves a public school, the districts are 'held harmless' for five years. When that time us up, the funding reverts back to the Education Fund to be reallocated... back to public education. Education money (a.k.a. your income tax) is education money - we can't use it for anything else. School voucher scholarships will be taken out of a different pot of money (the General Fund).

I too would like to challenge Senator Bramble to step up and explain exactly what this impressive sounding statement means. In my opinion Sen Bramble has a record of doing and saying whatever is necessary to further his own agenda and political ambitions regardless of the consequences of his actions or the veracity of his statements. The recent incident in which he was caught misusing the legislative research office in order to mislead the public comes to mind. Those politicians whose actions demonstrate that they operate on the principle that the "ends justify the means" are especially dangerous in a state such as ours where there is no balance of power between the political parties whatsoever.

The public voice said no to vouchers in every poll, yet Bramble and the Republican leadership rammed them through the legislature winning by only one vote in the House of Representatives. The public said no again by overcoming the Republican leadership's unreasonable hurdles and obtaining enough signatures for a referendum. The polls show that the majority of the public still says no, but the Republican leadership continues to lobby as hard as they can to force their will upon the people of Utah. Their "lawmaking" duty and responsibility in fact should have ended when the legislation they passed was signed by Governor Huntsman. By their actions the Republican leadership in this state has demonstrated once again that in Utah "A Representative Form of Government" means that they represent only themselves and their special interest groups.

Dear JBT - we'll try to help strengthen your tenuous grasp of the actual situation, but it's a little late in the evening to tackle it tonight. But never fear! We've heard your cry for help and will respond ASAP.
