It was a great discussion, but Senator Liljenquist put many questions about his medicaid bill to rest. The senator has discussed his medicaid reform ideas before here on the Senate Site, in committee (on Feb 10th), and in the Senate Daily Media Discussion (we’ll add the link tomorrow) but this afternoon was the first time SB 180 was debated on the senate floor. After about forty minutes of discussion, SB 180 passed without a single dissenting votes and moved forward to the third reading calendar.

Today’s Senate Medicaid Reform Debate

Glad to see this process underway, though want to urge caution. See important lessons from other states’ Medicaid reform efforts:

We need to make it that only American citizens are eligible for medicaid. That will eliminate a lot of the growth. Then make it so that people that are able to work–must work. Be a “druggie” and doesn’t want to work does not qualify you for medicaid.
I have worked at humana call center and a lot of the people wanting medicaid are parents of people bringing them in from their homelands and if they do not own a house then they qualify for medicaid instead of medicare.
I used Medicaid in 1972 in California for the birth of my first child, at that time it paid what you could not pay. Which ment that we submited our income for each month and then we were told how much we had to pay our of pocket before Medicaid took effect, so Medicaid only paid for part of the Hospital, but we paid for the Doctor. We should chang the current Midicaid back to that way, if people pay even a small amount there will be less abuse of the system. When people get things for free and do not have to work for them they will abuse the system and get lazy, we need to help them to HELP THEMSELVES again and give them back their pride. We have taked this away from those we say we are helping because they are poor-in reality we are making them stay poor and lazy and teaching their children to do the same. Example one of my son’s friends asked him one day in 1978 where his father was-my son told him he was at work. The friend said why does he work-you see this little boy’s parents lived off welfare, food stamps and medicaid so they did not work and this is what they were teaching their children. But I guess you could not really blame them after all thier parents had not worked and brought their children up on welfare so by then was now 2 generations on welfare and working on three.
WE NEED TO STOP THIS NOW because if we do not how many generations will be depending on the GOVERNMENT (TAXPAYERS) to support them because they do not know better??
So either change the system to help these people get off the system or End it all together and give it back to the Churches where it belongs!
I am disable from a couple of back surgeries, it is all I can do just to walk in my house, I have gained up to 300 pounds and this has really disabled me, I can’t execise, I can’t do nothing much but lay, I need the lap band surgery and they are tellling me that medicaid will not pay for it, this weight is causing diebeties, high blood pressure, not to mention it is getting harder to keep myself clean as I should be, and I know if something is done, I will not live long, but medicaid can put braces on these kids teeth that don’t need them and for what just looks, but they want save me from dying!! i don’t understand this, does anyone know if there is someone I could talk to to help me get this surgery? I have even thought about doctors who are studying, let them experiment on me?? you can email me at momstreasures08147@embarqmail.com Thanks
