Senator Mark Madsen

Short Biography

Senator Mark Benson Madsen was born in Washington D.C. Mark was raised in Colorado, where he attended Columbine High School for four years, earned multiple letters in athletics, and graduated early in 1981. Mr. Madsen served an honorable mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Spain. He is an Eagle Scout.

From 1984 through 1998 Mr. Madsen lived and worked in the Washington, D.C. area. He began in January 1984, as an intern for Utah Senator, Orrin Hatch. He then went on to work for lobbying organizations promoting Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative, and other conservative causes.

Between 1988 and 1994 Mark was involved in Central American political issues full time. He traveled extensively in Central America during these Cold War years, working in the field and in Washington, to support freedom fighters and to bring down tyrannical socialist governments in the region. In the aftermath of political upheaval Mr. Madsen stayed on to help the people establish new government institutions and to train them in the practice of democracy and the rule of law.

In 1994, Mark met Erin Michele Allen, an Idaho native, working in Washington, D.C. They married in June of 1995.

In 1999, the Madsen family moved to Utah and purchased a home in Eagle Mountain. Since relocating to Utah, Senator Madsen worked for Larry H. Miller Management in the Legal Department, as Project Manager in the commercial real estate division. He left the Larry H. Miller Group in July 2005, to work with Eagle Mountain Properties developing residential and commercial projects. Mark served on the Eagle Mountain City Council from 2002 to 2004.

Senator Madsen attended George Mason University, in Fairfax, Virginia, where he earned a Bachelor’s in Spanish Language and American Studies. He also has a Juris Doctor degree from BYU Law School, and is a member of the Utah Bar.

Senator Madsen’s first priorities are his faith and his family. Mr. and Mrs. Madsen have four children, a seven year old, four year-old twins, and a two year old. Mark’s interests and hobbies include spending time with his family, improving his home and yard, working with their German Shepherds, visiting historical sites, reading military and political histories, hunting and target shooting, travel, skiing and cooking. His aspirations include becoming a pilot and returning to the study of martial arts. His favorite television shows are the Simpsons and Fox News. The books that have most influenced Mr. Madsen are The Book of Mormon and Atlas Shrugged.
